Tony Overwater & The Hyper Project

Tony Overwater & The Hyper Project
Tony Overwater started out by trying several instruments during his youth. It was not until he took up the bass at seventeen, that his musical talent took shape. Shortly after his introduction to the bass guitar he became interested in the acoustic bass, and decided this was his instrument of choice.
One year later he was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where he received his first lessons from John Clayton. After six years of studying with different bass teachers such as Essiet Essiet, Ray Brown, Niels Henning Pederson, Dave Holland, Jacques Schols and Charlie Haden he was ready to start a career of his own.
His career as a musician began two years before he even graduated the conservatory. At 24 he formed the group Scapes and began touring. That same year he was asked to join David Murray and Sunny Murray on a European tour. Also in 1989 Tony was awarded the Most Promising Jazz Musician by the SJIN (National organization of Jazz and Improvised music).
In 1990 Tony produced his first CD with the group Scapes. He has also recorded with several other artists such as the Findley Brothers, Nelly Pouget, Sunny Murray and Siegfried Kessler.
Performing with such diverse musicians demonstrates his versatility with styles, depth and skills as an accomplished musician.
In 1992 Tony Overwater made several tours with the Sunny Murray quartet and recorded several CD's with Dutch groups such as The Yuri Honing Trio and Zut Alors and made his first recording with David Murray for Black Saint. In the same year he toured with the David Murray Quartet, with Idris Muhammed and Dave Burrell, throughout Great Britain. A month later his first score, written for the movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang, was performed live with the movie at a big culture festival in Holland.
Music and cinema started to be more important. In 1993 Tony Overwater started 2 projects in which he combined avant-garde silent movies from the beginning of this century with Contemporary Jazz performed live with his quartet. The Joris Ivens project combined Overwater's music with short movies from the Dutch cineast Joris Ivens. In the Cinema Pur Project French movies, from direcors like Man Ray and Germaine Dulac, were used in the same way, fusing these two art-forms together.
In 1994 Tony Overwater released his CD Motion Music, on which he intergrates his experiences with cinema into an 'auditive film' where the improvisations and compositions from the musical 'scenes'.
Besides his own projects Tony Overwater is also working as a sideman, touring throughout Europe with a wide diversity of European bands among which Michel Godard and Sylvie Courvoisier.

Tony Overwater is also co-founder and director of a new organization called Jazz in Motion. This is a unique project in which talented musicians are working together on the developement and promotion of their vision of contemporary jazz.
