Paul van Kemenade
Born Rotterdam, The Netherlands 1957
I started my musical career at the age of 13 by studying saxophone
and in 1974 I began to study music at the Brabants Conservatory.
My professional career began in 1976 by starting my own bands,
playing my own compositions.
I worked as a sideman in a lot of groups and played in several
duo's, trio's, quartets and quintets as well as in large groups and big
bands, e.g. "The Band", duo van Rossum/van Kemenade, "Ed de Vos
Prisma Orkest", "Palickx en Palickx", "Vaalbleek Vocaal" by Niko
Langenhuijsen, "Brevis", "Paul van Kemenade trio, quartet, quintet
and sextet, several dance projects, a lot of big bands, several
projects with performers, poets and painters, "De Orkaan", with a.o.
Han Bennink, Ernst Glerumand Sean Bergin, "The Berlin
Contemporary Jazz Orchestra" by Alexander von Schlippenbach with
a.o. Kenny Wheeler, Ed Thigpen, Benny Bailey, Gerd Dudek, Aki
Takase, "The Surinam Music Ensemble", led the workshoporchestra
"de Boventoon", and played in a lot of ad hoc ensembles.
During ten years (79-89), I tought over 600 workshops throughout
the whole country and led my own workshoporchestra "Brabants
Leerorkest", for 5 years. I have my own quintet for about 12 years
and had my sextet for a few years.
In 1984 I received the "Podiumprize" of the S.J.I.N., the Dutch Jazz
Foundation.
At the time I'm playing in:
- The Paul van Kemenade quintet and septet, playing my own
compositions,
- The Podium Trio (Wierbos/van Kemenade/Kuiper),
- The Podium Trio with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and
Cornell Rochester,
- The Contraband by Willem van Manen,
- Bizar Habit (with a.o. Dre Pallemaerts),
- The Eric van der Westen octet,
and occasionally with:
- Duo Aki Takase/Paul van Kemenade,
- Manfred Zepf quartet (with a.o. Heinz Becker),
- Trio Palinckx/van Kemenade/Palinckx
- Pulsation (with a.o. Stefan Bauer, Christoph Haberer, Michael
Heupel),
Different ad hoc ensembles, e.g.: with Peter Hofland (electronic
music) and Maurice Leenaars (Spanish music) and as a soloist in
several groups.
I have played all throughout Europe, Canada and Africa.
